One of the richest and most well studied areas in the region, the Goderdzi Petrified Forest Natural Monument is very unique. As a result of volcanic eruptions and strong winds, this tropical forest has become petrified. There are many semi-fossilized plant leaves from the late Pliocene era. Different tree types of palm, magnolia, laurel, birch, hornbeam, beech, and others are preserved in volcanic tufa. Other petrified fossils are found in the Dzindzistskali River valley and the Goderdzi National Monument.
