Route description
The route allows to walk in nature and visit Tamari Fortress. The location of the Fortress is really excellent, from the Fortress there is a view of the entire Akhaldaba and the strategic, historical roads passing through it. This is the reason for the rich history of the Fortress.
Akhaldaba Fortress is located on top of a mountain covered with mixed forest. Historians describe the Fortress as “large and solid”, with large living areas and outbuildings, moats and a water basin. As they found many times during the excavations, water was supplied to the fortress from the Nedzvura valley through clay pipes. The time of construction of the Akhaldaba Fortress is unknown, although it is assumed that the fortress was built in the 9th-10th centuries. Akhaldaba is also referred to as one of the trade centers where important trade routes passed. The fortress played an important role in many battles.
The route is easy to walk and does not require much physical effort. It starts from the center of Akhaldaba and after one turn will approach the entrance of the cemetery and the church. After going uphill, we will approach the Tamar fortress, from where it is possible to land on the other side of Akhaldaba, from where we will either return to the center or cross the pedestrian bridge to the main road.
